Where to Look When You Don’t Know What to Say

Last week I sat down for coffee with a woman who wanted help preparing for a high-stakes moment: she’s hoping to be selected to give the commencement speech at her university. She’s in her late 30s, a mom of two daughters, finishing a business degree remotely. And when I asked her what she wanted to say, she looked at me and said: “I don’t know what I have to say.”

The thing is, she’d just spent the previous hour telling me her story. Three jobs in LA. Multiple countries. Two kids. A degree that took longer and looked different and meant more because of it. Everything she needed was already there. She just couldn’t see it yet.
